This site provides access to digital images (PDFs) of partial photo copies of Japanese-language textbooks compiled in prewar Hawaii and held by the Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii.
These partial photo copies were collected by the late Professor Shoju Akutagawa, a scholar of Japanese-language education and the history of Japanese-language education in Hawaii, and were subsequently donated to the Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii.
Although the photo copied portions are limited to bibliographic elements such as the covers, tables of contents, lists of newly introduced kanji and vocabulary items, and colophons, these materials constitute a valuable resource that allows users to gain a convenient overview of Japanese-language textbooks compiled in prewar Hawaii.
