"Production and Perception of Japanese Downstep" ホワンヒョンギョン (筑波大学)，平山真奈美 (成蹊大学)，加藤孝臣 (上智大学)

In the interface between syntax and phonology, it is widely recognized that syntactic information can affect the prosody. Downstep in Japanese is an instructive case to examine the syntax-prosody interaction. In this paper, we investigate the influence of lexical categories on downstep. The results of production experiments suggest that adjectives in [X1 [X2 N]] may block downstep, whereas adjectives in other structures, as well as nouns and verbs generally, do not block it. We propose that the presence or absence of downstep can be accounted for by the interaction between syntactic structures and lexical categories. Further, results of a pilot comprehension test are reported, where we explore whether the degree of downstep affects listeners’ comprehension of the sentence.
