"Morphology and Accent in Japanese and Korean" Clemens POPPE (早稲田大学)

Japanese and Korean ‘pitch accent’ systems have been shown to have a number of striking similarities, but also some notable differences (Fukui 2003; Hayata 1999; Ramsey 1978). In this talk I will give an overview of the most important similarities and differences in morpho-accentual patterns and rules in ‘multi-pattern’ (Uwano 1999) accent systems that have been reported for the following varieties: Tokyo Japanese, Kansai Japanese, North/South Kyengsang Korean, and Hamgyeong/Yanbian Korean. The focus will lie on the accent patterns of affixed forms in the broad sense: derived forms, inflected forms, and word-particle combinations. One major difference that can be observed is the relative importance of morphological structure in Japanese compared to Korean. A number of possible explanations for this will be considered from functional and typological perspectives. I will also discuss the relevance of the similarities and the differences between the varieties of the two languages for the typology of word-prosodic systems.
