"Modal aspects of quotation: A cross-typological analysis" Jan WISLICKI (University of Warsaw)
The aim of this talk is to present a wide range of data supporting a modal semantic analysis of quotation (e.g. ‘Yamatai’ was a name of Japan). Moving across all main types of quotation, I discuss semantically relevant effects and compare them with basic elements of modal theories. I draw observations from semantic compositionality, identification of quoted speakers as well as special readings arising for modals appearing in the context of quotation. I show that these observations deliver strong arguments in favour of treating quotations as expressions shifting the actual language (or, more specifically, the actual model) of interpretation to the one in which the originally quoted expression is interpreted. In this sense quotation shares with other modals the basic property of making use of some non-actual possibilities. Still, it involves a different dimension of possibility, i.e. possible models of interpretation, rather than possible situations. This approach, I argue, not only delivers a powerful descriptive theory of quotation, but also sheds much new light on the role and scope of modality in natural languages.
