- “Light Verb and Verbal Compounds”
奥 聡 (北海道大学 教授)
Unaccusativity/Transitivity alternations can be observed in Chinese, English, and Japanese. I will discuss some differences among the three languages and explore implications for Verbal Compounding and Transitivity Harmony.
- “Grammar Competition and Parametric Ambiguity”
藤井 友比呂 (横浜国立大学 准教授)
Competition of different syntactic hypotheses in language acquisition is discussed from a perspective of 'parametric ambiguity' (Yang 2002). I first rethink the case of one-replacement in English, where the nested structure competes with the flat structure (e.g.,Lidz, Waxman & Freedman 2003). I then try to apply the 'parametric ambiguity' view to the case of the strictly head-final internal structure of subordinate clauses in Japanese.

- “When Even Meets Only: A Dissection of EVEN in Chinese”
LIAO Wei-wen Roger (台湾中央研究院 Associate Research Fellow (准教授相当))
The presupposition that even carries has been controversial between additive and scalar. The puzzle can be solved if we look at Mandarin Chinese, where there are two ways of representing EVEN, shenzhi and lian...dou (Shyu 2004). We present an analysis for them and show that it not only shed light on the even-only sentences, but also helps clarify many of the puzzles surrounding the standard analysis of even (Wagner 2005).
- “Some Notes on Stranded Particles in Japanese”
(joint work with Hiroaki Saito)
坂本 祐太 (中京大学 講師)
In this work, we discuss Particle Stranding Ellipsis (PSE) in Japanese, where particles such as the topic marker -*wa* are stranded without their associates, claiming that PSE is best analyzed as an instance of ellipsis on the basis of data regarding the presence/absence of linguistic antecedents and indeterminate pronouns.
16:30~18:30
- “On ECM subjects in Japanese”
岸本 秀樹 (神戸大学 教授)
In this presentation, on the basis of new data drawn from clausal pronominalization, focus association with dake ‘only’, etc. I argue that Japanese ECM subjects remain in the embedded clause of the ECM constructions without raising to the matrix object position, but that they nevertheless appear in a structural position sufficiently high to be accusatively marked by the matrix predicate.
- “What Can Child Japanese Tell Us about Syntactic Theory and Vice Versa?”
村杉 恵子 (南山大学 教授)
‘Universal Grammar’ is composed of abstract linguistic knowledge, absolute and relative, and a computational system that is special to language. In this talk, we will briefly overview the typical “errors” that Japanese-acquiring children produce, and show that the errors reflect the knowledge of relative universality of grammar.

- “Raising to Object and Clausal Arguments”
高橋 真彦 (山形大学 准教授)
This study attempts to derive a certain constraint on raising to object out of clausal arguments in Japanese from the minimalist assumptions. I provide a unified account of the constraint on raising to object and the ban on multiple accusative NPs in the causative construction, which is often called the “deep” double-o constraint.
- “Predicativism and Anaphoric Uses of Proper Names”
和泉 悠 (南山大学 准教授)
According to predicativism about proper names, proper names as such are predicates that are semantically on a par with common nouns, referring to no particular individuals. In this talk, I critically examine a common objection to predicativism that involves anaphoric occurrences of names (e.g., Hawthorne and Manley 2012, Rami 2014, Schoubye 2016).
12:30~14:30
- “On Nominal-internal Distributive Interpretation in Japanese Fragment Answers”
宮本 陽一 (大阪大学 教授)
This paper discusses the nominal-internal distributive interpretation (Miyamoto 2009) in Japanese fragment answers. I show that the approach based on focus movement, followed by deletion (Nishigauchi and Fujii 2006, Saito 2004) best explains the availability of the interpretation in point. By so doing, I support An's (2016, 2018) Extra Deletion. If time permits, I will also touch on right dislocation in this language.
- “Two Implicit Applicative Constructions in Chinese and the Syntax of Silent Light Verbs”
TSAI Wei-Tien Dylan (国立清華大学 教授)
In recent years, people got very interested in how applicativity is expressed in a robust analytic language such as Chinese. This paper argues that inner light verbs are actually analytic versions of Bantu applicatives, and that they can be silent categories which creates an illusion of "transitivization" in a variety of syntactic constructions.
