趣旨 / Purpose
このたび国立国語研究所は，言語学関係の出版社として世界をリードするDe Gruyter Mouton（ドゥ・グロイター ムートン社。ベルリン／ボストン）と研究成果の出版に関して包括的な協定を結びました。これは，国語研が行っている国際的な共同研究活動に注目した同社が，国語研に対して研究成果の国際的普及を申し出たことに依るものです。
第一弾として，柴谷方良ライス大学教授/国語研客員教授と影山太郎国語研所長が編集主幹となり，HANDBOOKS OF JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS シリーズの刊行計画が進められています。これは，日本語および日本語言語学の研究に関する包括的な英文ハンドブックで，現在の予定では全11巻，各巻約700ページという他に類を見ない大規模な企画となっています。
内容は，それぞれの領域におけるこれまでの重要な研究成果を俯瞰し，現在における最先端の研究状況をまとめるとともに，今後の研究方向にも示唆を与えることを意図しています。そのため，国語研の関係者（専任および客員教員，諸大学の共同研究者）だけでなく，各領域における国内外の第一線の研究者が執筆を担当します。
本計画が達成されれば，日本語研究の成果ならびに動向を世界に広く問うことによって言語学の学術的発展に寄与するだけでなく，本シリーズが多方面から評価・批判を受けることによって日本語研究自体の進展にも資することができると期待されます。
The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) has made an agreement of academic cooperation with De Gruyter Mouton (Berlin and Boston), a world leading publishing company reputed for high-quality linguistics books and journals, with a view to promoting the international dissemination of its research outcomes. The agreement of cooperation is based on Mouton's offer of commissioned publications to NINJAL.
As a starter, the Handbooks of Japanese Language and Linguistics (HJLL) Series is in preparation, with Masayoshi Shibatani (Rice University / NINJAL) and Taro Kageyama (Director-General, NINJAL) as the series editors. The HJLL series, comprising eleven volumes with about 700 pages per volume, surpasses all currently available reference works on Japanese in both scope and depth, and provides a comprehensive survey of nearly the entire field of Japanese linguistics. Each volume includes a balanced selection of contributions by established linguists from Japan as well as from outside Japan that summarize mile-stone achievements in the field, provides an overview of the state of the art, and points to future directions of research.
