Purpose of the Symposium
Many under-described languages in the world are in danger of extinction. UNESCO reports in 2009 that there are eight such languages in Japan; Ainu, Hachijo, Amami, Kunigami, Okinawa, Miyako, Yaeyama, and Yonaguni. Importantly, many Japanese traditional dialects are also in danger of extinction.
The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies are hosting an international symposium on the description, documentation and revitalization of the endangered languages/dialects in Japan and Northeast Asia. We hope that researchers working on endangered languages both in Japan and elsewhere can enjoy this symposium.
